Legislative Action Alert - 06/03/05

The Connecticut General Assembly comes to a close June 8 at midnight. Between now and then, you can help make a difference by calling your legislators and urging them to pass two bills of critical importance:

§         SB 1111: This bill would restore to City of Waterbury Employees (including Local 353 and Local 818) full rights to binding arbitration under the Municipal Employee Relations Act (MERA). The right to fair and neutral binding arbitration was taken away in 2001 under the provisions of Special Act 01-1. It’s time to right this wrong and give Waterbury city workers the same rights every other municipal worker has.

§         SB 94: This is the “Clean Contracting” reform bill that would help put an end to corrupt privatization. SB 94 requires state agencies to submit a cost-benefit analysis before they could privatize any functions. It also requires state agencies to explain the impact of any service contract on the public and the workers currently performing the job and bidding contractors to show their fitness for gaining a state contract.

Please call your State Senator and your State Representative this weekend. It’s important to contact both. Since they will be working at the Capitol to come to closure on the budget, contact them via their Capitol phone numbers. Click here to locate your State Rep. and State Senator. Scroll down the page, fill in your street address and you will be provided with the phone numbers you need.
