Local 391's Michael Whitehead Honored as CO of Year by ACU

Congratulations to Michael Whitehead of Local 391 of Council 4, who was honored by AFSCME Corrections United as National Correction Officer of the Year at ACU's biennial Public Safety Congress that took place Sept. 16-18 in Houston.

ACU honored Whitehead for his role in saving the life of fellow correctional officer Peter Kuhlmann after an inmate with a history of assaults on staff attacked Kuhlmann with a handmade weapon tipped with a razor. Whitehead and Kuhlmann work at Northern Correctional Institution in Somers, the state's super-max facility.
